Shipping goods from Bali is a relatively straightforward process. There are a number of shipping and cargo companies on the Island that will take all the hassle and stress away from you. Their experience in handling these things will be invaluable to you.
Enclosed Shipping Containers
Steel containers come in 3 sizes. 20 ft (30 cubic meters) 40 ft (60 cubic meters) and 40 ft High Cube (72 cubic meters)
There are also weight limits that apply to the containers and if you are shipping stone, or steel then you may not be able to use all of the available space in the container.
Enclosed shipping containers offer high level of protection and safety for your items. This is the most common form of transporting goods across the world.
(FCL) Full Container Load
The most economical way to ship is to take up a whole container for yourself.
This is also faster as the customs and importation authorities only have one lot of paperwork to deal with.
(LCL) Less Container Load
LCL is useful if you are only exporting a small order and unable to fill the container.
This is where the container is filled with goods from a number of different people or companies.
This service is generally more expensive and takes longer due to the import officials having to check the paperwork for all of the shipped goods individually.
Shipping Time by Sea Freight
It takes approximately 4 weeks to ship internationally from Indonesia and to Asia and Southeast Asia destinations are approximately 2 weeks.
Bare in mind that there can be long delays due to adverse weather and this can add several weeks to the actual landing times.
You also have to consider that it can be held up in customs after landing. This tends to happen more with mixed or LTF containers.
Shipping Cost by Sea Freight
Cost of shippping varies depending on the destination port. Shipping companies can and do change their prices throughout the year, depending on demand.
You also have to take account of the following:-
- Local packing and handling fees
- Transport fees at either end of the destination.
- Port loading fees
- D.D.C. fees (Document & Destination Charge) at your local port.

Cargo Rates
Cargo rates vary from company to company. Most agents will normally negotiate the price and fight to get the best prices. These prices are then usually passed on to the client.
Of course the larger cargo and shipping agents get the better deals as they are moving large quantities of cargo.
Once you fond a cargo company that provides you with a good service at an acceptable price it is always best to work with them. They get to know you and what you are looking for.
They know how to deal with the paperwork and can advise you on all aspects of shipping your goods.
You want to always try and get a price for a door to door service. This will not include import duty or storage charges if your container gets stuck in the port but is the best way to do it.
Air Freight
Air Freight is by far the quickest way to ship, but it is also the most expensive way.
You will be charged by the kilo as well as by volume. IT can be a combination of the two or whichever happens to be the greatest.
The cargo calculations state that carton’s volume is equal to about 15 kilos. If there is less than 15 kilos of product in that carton box, then you still will pay for 15 kilos. If there is more than 15 kilos, you pay the greater amount.
Generally the costs do not reduce the more you ship. It tends to remain the same per kilo price.
The cost of shipping by air often costs more than the cost of the goods you are shipping.
Insurance
You can and should purchase insurance for your shipment in Indonesia from the cargo company.
You can also check with your local insurance agent but again make sure you understand the terms and conditions of the policy.
